Eduardo Bauzá, the
Chairperson of the United Nations Joint Disciplinary Committee
(JDC) resigns
21 November 2008
Mr. Eduardo Bauzá has resigned his post of Chairperson of the UN
Joint Disciplinary Committee (JDC). The role of the JDC is to
advise the Secretary-General in disciplinary cases.
In his resignation letter to the Secretary-General, Mr. Bauzá
stresses that “Justice will be much better served by focusing
all efforts on launching the new system as soon as possible”.
The Chair of the JDC also recalls the findings of the Redesign
Panel - that the current UN justice system “fails to meet many
basic standards of due process established in international human
rights instruments”, and explains how, after 1 January 2009,
he “cannot in good conscience continue to lend
[his]
name in support of the old system”.
UNJustice hopes that Mr. Buazá’s sense of responsibility and
intellectual honesty will serve as inspiration to those officials
who can do something to ensure the effective reform of the UN
justice system.
