Human rights in the
United Nations administration of justice: petition handed to the EU
28 November 2008
UNJustice today sent the representatives of the Governments of the
European Union’s Member States and of the European Union’s
Institutions the petition which has been opened for signature on
our website, “Human rights in the United Nations administration
of justice”.
UNJustice recalls that fair justice is still under threat in the
United Nations system of administration of justice and that if
human rights are to become a reality in the UN, it is essential to
get the support of all the people and institutions that share
these same fundamental rights.
For six decades, and until the present day, no measures taken by
the General Assembly in this respect have led to any concrete
improvement. Yet attaining the UN's objectives depends largely on
an effective system of administration of justice.
This petition’s intention is to convey to the General Assembly
negotiations the support of individuals around the world for
effective and sweeping reform of the administration of justice in
the United Nations. Specifically, the petitioners call on the
European Union, the UN budget’s largest contributor, to ensure, as
a matter of urgency, that the laws and practices of the United
Nations internal justice system are fair and consistent with
international human rights standards.
At a later stage, UNJustice will present the signatures collected
to the Governments and International Authorities concerned as a
token of the commitment of all the societies who understand and
support this issue.
