UNJustice message
|
|
At a time when the United Nations is playing a decisive role in
coping with world problems which affect the lives of millions of
people,
fair play
-
a combination of observance of the rules,
respect for the
defenceless,
and
prevention of adverse behaviour -
is
the
condition under which human
cooperation
becomes
both possible and necessary.
With a view to this,
to
help these essential features
cross
the
arbitrary and artificial barriers
to realize the UN's potential as a
positive force in the world,
UNJustice
devotes
itself to
no other
task with more dedication than to the very task it got its name
from:
encouraging
fair play in the United Nations system of administration of
justice.

News from
the
office of Registrar of the UNAT
5 January 2012
New deadlines have been adopted on 22 December 2011 by the UN
General Assembly within the on-going reform process of the
internal justice system of the Organization.
The announcement below from the office of Registrar of the
United Nations Appeals Tribunal contains useful information in
this regard.
Dear all,
As you may be aware, the General Assembly has amended
Article 7.1 (c) of the Statute of the Appeals Tribunal to
extend the deadline for filing appeals of the Dispute
Tribunal judgments from 45 days to 60 days. It has also
established a 30-day deadline for filing appeals of
interlocutory orders rendered by the Dispute Tribunal. The
General Assembly adopted the amendment on Saturday, 24
December 2011, on the recommendation of the Fifth Committee
(A/C.5/66/L.10, to be published as Resolution 66/237).
Applying the amended deadline for filing appeals to our
cases, we would like to announce the following:
1. For appeals whose deadline fell on or before 24 December
2011, the old 45-day rule continues to apply.
2. For appeals whose deadline falls on or after 25 December
2011, the new 60-day rule will apply. In concrete terms, if
an appeal was due under the old 45-day rule on Sunday, 25
December 2011, the appellant may now file the appeal by 9
January 2012. If an appeal is due under the old 45-day rule
on Friday, 6 January 2012, the appellant may now file the
appeal by Monday, 23 January 2012 (not counting the weekend
of 21-22 January).
The appropriate changes in the Statute of the Appeals
Tribunal will be made on the website in due course.
Thank you for your attention.
