UNJustice message

At a time when the United Nations is playing a decisive role in coping with world problems which affect the lives of millions of people, fair play - a combination of observance of the rules, respect for the defenceless, and prevention of adverse behaviour - is the condition under which human cooperation becomes both possible and necessary.

With a view to this, to help these essential features cross the arbitrary and artificial barriers to realize the UN's potential as a positive force in the world, UNJustice devotes itself to no other task with more dedication than to the very task it got its name from: encouraging fair play in the United Nations system of administration of justice.

Concern over delay in finalizing the UN female staffer's complaints of sex assault and hostile work environment

24 January 2012

UNJustice hopes that the UN Administration will release soon the results of the internal investigation regarding the female UN consultant who has been reportedly sexually assaulted by her direct supervisor.

UNJustice is also concerned to know that shortly after the complaint the woman's contract with the UN was not renewed.

According to the internal rules of the Organization, the consideration of a discrimination complaint alleging harassment should be completed and a reply issued within three months after receipt of the complaint.

The woman lodged the complaint on 22 September 2011 and, on 12 January 2012, she received a reply from Ms.Catherine Pollard, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Human Resources Management. The letter said: "The panel submitted its report to me on 16 December 2011. Upon completion of the process set out in section 5.18 of ST/SGB/2008/5, you shall be duly informed of the outcome of the investigation and of the action taken. Please note that this process may take some time."

UNJustice believes that any further delay in finalizing this complaint will only add to the impression that senior UN staff can commit violations against the most defenseless employees with impunity and that the Organization will shield its managers from being brought to justice.

Stop the UNJustice clock!

Today, the United Nations is celebrating without the provision of a system of administration of justice that promotes compliance with human rights norms. To make the United Nations' work a true manifestation of culture and humanness, the United Nations needs a fundamentally new system of justice.
